The Daughters of Charity Health System (DCHS) has moved into exclusive negotiations regarding the potential acquisition of Downey Regional Medical Center in Downey, CA. Downey Regional Medical Center is a 199-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving Southeast Los Angeles County.

More than 200 leaders, physicians, and nurses from the Daughters of Charity Health System (DCHS) gathered at the Santa Clara Marriott Hotel July 9-10 to kick off the Clinical Advancement in Research and Education (CARE) program, an 18-month plan to create nursing leadership at the bedside while reducing sepsis in the three Northern California DCHS hospitals.

George Kent, MD, associate program director for the O’Connor Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program, was recently honored by the Santa Clara County Medical Association (SCCMA) for going above what is expected in medical education activities.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus. Swine flu virus regularly causes outbreaks in pigs but rarely affects humans. Occasionally there have been human infections of swine flu and in this current situation there is evidence of person-to-person transmission.

The Daughters of Charity Health System (DCHS) plans to reduce mortality rates from sepsis in their hospitals by at least 25 percent annually by implementing the first stage of its Clinical Advancement in Research and Education (CARE) project in July ’09.
