Saint Louise Regional Hospital (SLRH) successfully launched its new electronic medical record (EMR), Accessible Real Time Clinical Information System (ARCIS). ARCIS will deliver benefits such as increased patient safety via technology such as an Electronic Medication Administration Record (EMAR), increased clinician productivity with Medical Device Integration (MDI), and the foundation to meet the CMS Meaningful Use requirements. Physicians will be viewing clinical information and entering patient problems in Phase 1. Phase 2 is planned for mid-2013 and plans include the implementation of Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) and Barcode Medication Administration (BCMA).
ARCIS allows information to be shared securely and quickly. As a result, health care providers can access data such as medical histories, medications, and test results more efficiently and determine the best course of treatment for patients sooner from inside the hospital or at their offices.
“Our transition to the electronic medical record combines the best of the old and new,” stated SLRH President and Chief Executive Officer Joanne Allen. “It is advanced technology supporting our Mission and tradition of providing quality care for the whole person – body, mind, and spirit.”
Over the past eighteen months, associates from all areas of the hospital and health system helped to implement ARCIS at Saint Louise. The Project Team made up of Daughters of Charity Health System IT, SLRH Informatics, Vendors, and SLRH Super users designed, built, tested, and trained on the new computer systems. Already underway and over the next year, medical device integration technology will also be implemented. Currently in place in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, this capability permits the EMR to directly accept readings such as patient vital signs from bedside monitors. This integration allows health care providers to spend less time writing and documenting and more time with patients and their families.
Allen concluded, “Our new electronic medical record enables all members of a patient’s health care team to see a more comprehensive picture of the patient’s health history, current condition, and treatment. It reduces paperwork and costs, makes it easier for individuals to manage their own health information, and helps us to deliver the best possible care to everyone we serve.”
